What is Fibromyalgia?

"Fibromyalgia is a neurosensory disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, joint stiffness, and fatigue. The condition is chronic (ongoing), but pain comes and goes and moves about the body. The disorder is often misdiagnosed or unrecognized and is and often complicated by mood and anxiety disorders."

What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

"Polymyalgia rheumatica is a syndrome that causes pain and stiffness in the hips and shoulders of people over the age of 50."

"Although the major characteristics of this condition are just pain and stiffness, there are reasons to believe it is more than just old-fashioned rheumatism. Patients are commonly so afflicted that their muscles atrophy from disuse. A similar complaint of such weakness is also seen in serious muscle diseases. Moreover, some patients develop arthritis or a disease called giant cell arteritis or temporal arteritis."

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

"Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) state of severe physical and mental lassitude, related neither to excessive exertion nor to any apparent medical condition, although it may follow a viral infection. Defined as persistent fatigue continuing for at least 6 months (but often extending for much longer), accompanied by a specific set of symptoms including muscle and/or joint pains, which may last for up to 24 h after even mild exertion."

The excessive carbohydrate diet in combination with protein and fat deficiencies causes a condition known as "leaky gut syndrome" in which vegetable protein molecules from grains, corn, soy, and legumes pass through the intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream. The body's immune system sees these molecules as invaders and sets about to attack them. The immune system attacks the intestinal tract and other areas of the body which contain proteins similar to those found in the vegetable products.

Fibromyalgia, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are caused by a protein deficiency and excessive carbohydrate consumption which occurs when one eats a high-carbohydrate diet as recommended by the USDA Food Guide Pyramid.

Leaky gut syndrome is always associated with autoimmune diseases, conditions in which the immune system makes antibodies against the body's own tissue. Diseases in this category include Lupus, Alopecia Areata, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Vitiligo, Thyroiditis, Vasculitis, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Hives, Sjogren's disease (dry eyes), and Raynaud's Disease. Symptoms can include gastrointestinal reflux, pains, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, bloating, or bleeding from the rectum. Diarrhea and constipation may at times alternate from one to the other. Unexplained weight loss and the inability to regain weight are very common; but weight gain to the point of obesity is common with these diseases and the high-carbohydrate diet.

Don't expect a physician to have a "magic" cure. Drugs are not available to cure fibromyalgia, polymyalgia rheumatica, or chronic fatigue syndrome. The drugs given only serve to mask the symptoms.

A contributing factor causing chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia is adrenal gland exhaustion. This occurs in the cycle between hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and diabetes (high blood sugar). Hypoglycemia is caused by insulin resistance of the cells during which time the pancreas produces a high level of insulin to force glucose into the cells. The insulin stays at an abnormally high level which triggers the adrenal gland to secrete cortisol and adrenalin in an attempt to force the insulin level down. Cortisol and adrenalin are very strong catabolic hormones, meaning they are involved in breaking down body tissue. This catabolic action on the bones causes bone loss, osteoporosis, degenerative disc disease, muscle pain, and tendonitis in as little as one year. Once diabetes becomes full blown, the pancreas stops producing insulin and the cycle stops, but insulin injections can cause the same effect.

The hormones adrenaline and cortisol are produced in the adrenal medulla. The adrenal gland gets tired of producing excessive levels of adrenaline and cortisol in the same manner as the pancreas when it gets tired of producing excessive amounts of insulin. Adrenal exhaustion does occur. When the adrenal gland collapses, so will you. One day the runner is full of power. A couple of months later you are weak, exhausted and you ache all over. The doctor says you have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and/or fibromyalgia, and "nobody knows what causes it." Well, the doctor may not know what causes it, but the answer is easily understood.

Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes

This is a must-read book. Gary Taubes is an award-winning scientist who has specialized in exposing misleading, incorrect, or fraudulent science. Life Without Bread is an important addition to the growing body of literature on the benefits and importance of low-carb diet. Written by Christian Allan, Ph.D., and Wolfgang Lutz, M.D., the book is based on Dr. Lutz's experience using carbohydrate restricted diets with thousands of patients for more than 40 years. It is based on extensive research in the medical and scientific literature and provides ample references. The book presents a unified theory of how high (and even moderate) levels of dietary carbohydrate cause or exacerbate various health problems and how carbohydrate restriction can help people to recover from those problems.

The book Life Without Bread by Christian Allan, Ph.D. and Wolfgang Lutz, M.D. has a chapter on gastrointestinal diseases. Don't be mislead by the title to believe the cure is the simple elimination of bread. Mr. Lutz's older book is out of print but has essentially the same information. It may even contain more detail than his new book above. Fortunately, Chapter VII: Gastro-Intestinal Tract of the older book can be read online.
